Emporia Joins Forces with Utility Companies to Offer New Savings-Based Program

For customers looking for easy ways to save on their at-home EV charging, these new programs help conserve energy at times of high demand

Emporia, a Colorado-based smart home energy management technology company, today announced its utility demand response program that strategically joins forces with Virtual Peaker and Energy Hub to make saving energy and money even easier.  By enrolling in these special programs with Emporia products like the Emporia Level 2 EV Charger and Emporia Alpha-ESS Home Battery, users will get special insights and savings simply by doing their normal routines. At a time of rising electricity costs and extreme weather that can stress the grid to the point of rolling blackouts, these new programs offer relief with minimal interference from the customer.

“We’re always searching for ways to help consumers save and these partnerships at the utility level are a new offering to do that,” said Shawn McLaughlin, chief executive officer, Emporia. “We’ve always wanted to do right by the customer and this new program for EV users who are charging at home can go a long way in helping to ensure the sustainability of local infrastructure.”

How It Works

Pending availability in your zip code, Emporia is partnering with a growing number of power companies to further integrate energy management features as part of your service. Customers are rewarded with either cash back or credit for certain qualifying events. For example, in times of very high power demand, the utility will either shut off your charger or minimize the charge rate to conserve power. In most cases, the consumer won’t even notice the change and will simply be rewarded with the credit on their bills or cash back.

However, thanks to the integrations with Emporia’s app, the consumer will be able to manage each event as they see fit. Should they decide to decline the shut off or power slow down, they can simply decline for that event and forego the reward.

How to Get Started

The first two utilities to roll the program out are Green Mountain Power and Dominion Energy, both based in Virginia, with more utilities coming soon. The Emporia team is working with a number of partners and we expect to roll out additional companies throughout the rest of the year and into 2024.

Depending on how the utility would like to structure the program, consumers can expect the savings to take share in one of two ways:

  • The utility company may offer discounted or even free Emporia products within their own internal portals. From there, the customer can order them, get setup and join the program through the Emporia app.
  • For existing Emporia customers who are serviced by participating utilities, they can enter their zip code in the Emporia app to see if there are any programs available in their area.

For areas that aren’t being serviced yet, Emporia is eager to hear from you and can be reached at https://www.emporiaenergy.com/contact. Tell us where you live and your utility provider and we can take care of the rest!
